Flight training gets most of the spotlight, but for many CPL students, the DGCA ground exams are the harder hurdle — five theory papers, each requiring a minimum 70% to pass, plus a separate radio communication exam. Here’s what each one actually covers.

1. Air Navigation

Covers the principles of dead reckoning, chart reading, radio navigation aids, GPS systems, and flight planning calculations. This paper is heavy on applied mathematics — you’re calculating headings, ground speed, fuel requirements, and time enroute, not just memorising theory.

2. Aviation Meteorology

Focuses on weather systems relevant to flight safety: cloud formation, pressure systems, turbulence, icing conditions, and how to interpret meteorological reports (METAR, TAF) and charts used for flight planning.

3. Air Regulations

Covers the legal and regulatory framework pilots operate under — DGCA rules, ICAO annexes as adopted in India, airspace classifications, licensing rules, and rules of the air. This paper tends to be the most memorisation-heavy of the five.

4. Technical General

Covers the fundamentals of how aircraft work — aerodynamics, aircraft structures, engines, and systems that apply across aircraft types generally, rather than one specific model.

5. Technical Specific

This paper is specific to the aircraft type you’re training on, covering its particular systems, performance characteristics, and limitations in detail.

Plus: RTR(A) — Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical)

Separate from the five theory papers, RTR(A) tests your radio communication procedures and requires demonstrated English language proficiency at ICAO Level 4 or higher. This exam is often underestimated by students who are confident in flying but less prepared for structured radio phraseology under exam conditions.

How to Prepare Effectively

Structured Ground School Makes the Difference

Students who treat ground school as a box-ticking exercise alongside flying tend to struggle more than those who follow a structured, faculty-guided study plan. At FlyBy Aviation, our ground school faculty run focused sessions for each of these five subjects plus dedicated RTR(A) preparation, based on years of DGCA exam pattern experience. Apply for a demo lecture to see our teaching approach firsthand.
