Trained as a pilot outside India and now want to fly commercially back home? A foreign CPL or ATPL doesn’t automatically let you work in Indian airspace — you’ll need to convert it to a valid DGCA licence first. It’s a well-defined process, but one with several moving parts. Here’s how it actually works.
Step 1: Confirm Your Base Eligibility
You need a valid CPL or ATPL issued by an ICAO-recognised licensing authority, along with the minimum flight hours required for the licence category. Before applying, gather:
- Authenticated flight logbooks
- A letter of verification from your foreign licensing authority
- Educational certificates
- Police clearance certificate
Step 2: Clear the DGCA Theoretical Exams
Even with a valid foreign licence, DGCA requires you to pass three examinations to confirm your knowledge aligns with Indian aviation regulations:
- Air Regulations
- Composite paper covering Meteorology and Navigation
- RTR(A) — Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical)
Step 3: Complete Conversion Flying
You’ll need to complete approximately 10–25 hours of conversion flying at a DGCA-approved flying school. This typically includes day and night general flying, an instrument rating check, and cross-country flight requirements — essentially confirming you can apply your existing skills under Indian airspace procedures and conditions.
Step 4: Get a DGCA Class 1 Medical Certificate
Regardless of any medical certification you hold from your foreign licensing authority, you must obtain a fresh DGCA Class 1 Medical Certificate from an approved Indian medical examiner. This isn’t optional or a formality — budget time for it early in your conversion timeline.
Step 5: Submit Your Application via eGCA
Once your exams, conversion flying, and medical are complete, you submit your full documentation and applicable fees (approximately ₹5,000 per endorsement) through DGCA’s eGCA portal for final licence issuance.
How Long Does It Take?
Most candidates complete the entire conversion process in 3 to 5 months, assuming documentation is in order and exam attempts go smoothly. Costs typically range from ₹3,00,000 to ₹5,00,000, covering verification, exam fees, conversion flying hours, and licensing charges.
Common Delays to Avoid
- Incomplete or improperly authenticated logbooks — get these verified early
- Underestimating RTR(A) English proficiency requirements
- Booking conversion flying hours too late, leading to scheduling backlogs at busy flying schools
